Teacher Training: Practicing and Teaching Back Bends – One in a series of Teacher Trainings at Serendipity with John Schumacher

In ordinary day to day life we stand, sit, and recline; we bend forward and turn, but few of us arch backwards. People sit in chairs and cars and look down at their devices, and over time, the chest muscles shorten, the spine rounds, and the ribcage contracts. Our entire body is affected by this. Breathing is restricted, organs are compressed, and our blood flow diminishes. Psychologically we become downcast.

Back Bending Poses are a powerful remedy for this dilemma. Among the most challenging, stimulating, and striking of asanas, Back Bends attenuate and reverse the conditions described above. They energize the body, liberate the spine, and uplift the mind.

Over the weekend, you will learn the fundamental actions of Back Bends and sequences for introducing Back Bends to beginners. From there, we will explore a variety of Backbending asanas, building up to the practice and teaching of Urdhva Dhanurasana and Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana.

Morning sessions will focus on practicing and teaching Back Bends. We will practice teach in the afternoon sessions to help you refine your skills as a teacher. Optional early morning practices are open to all.
