Philadelphia Yoga Exchange

Roots Philly Yoga was born of the idea that a group of people practicing yoga together could be instrumental in the shaping of a neighborhood. Roots was created as a platform for cooperation, collaboration and community–with the Ashtanga Yoga lineage as the foundation. Founders Erik and Lauren are students of certified Ashtanga teacher David Garrigues and authorized teacher Meghan Kirk. Lauren is also a student of renowned Iyengar Yoga teacher Joan white.

The Practice

Ashtanga Vinyasa is a total-body practice that builds strength, flexibility, balance and is accessible to all people. This flowing system of yoga builds heat in the body by linking movement with breath. We offer a variety of classes a week: restorative, fire flow, integrated flow, slow & strong, and candlelight flow. All classes will share a similar structure of sun salutations, standing and seated postures, backbends, arm balances and inversions, with the exception of the restorative classes – which are just that. Students should expect to experience ease and effort in class, in a supportive environment taught by Philadelphia’s finest teachers. The room is lightly heated around 75-80 degrees depending on the time of year.

What should i bring?

Wear comfortable, breathable clothes and expect to sweat! We recommend bringing a small hand towel for keeping dry. Yoga mats are available to rent for free or to purchase. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of class.
