Ayurveda & Yoga with Susan Weis Bohlen & Dawn Curtis

September 6 - September 8

The Ancient Art of Ayurveda is India’s traditional system of medicine dating back over 5000 years. The teachings of Ayurveda embrace the idea of balancing the body and mind through holistic practices, such as organic food choices, herbal remedies, oil therapies, and yoga. This approach to living is based on understanding how the five elements of Ayurveda are defined within us and in our environment.

This Weekend Retreat takes an investigative approach to identifying the characteristics of each element and outlines practical ways to enhance or minimize the effect of those qualities in our daily practice on and off the mat.

Combining the “sister sciences” of Ayurveda and Yoga, this Retreat will give participants tools – through diet, yoga, pranayama and meditation – to take their health and healing into their own hands. We will begin with a brief overview of Ayurvedic philosophy followed by instruction on how to discover your elemental body type including how to cook and eat for optimal health and balance. We will weave in stress-busting yoga and pranayama practices designed to gently warm the body, detoxify the system, and will incorporate meditation, sound bath, or yoga nidra to soothe the soul.

Susan will teach you the fundamentals of Ayurvedic cooking! We will learn about the 6 tastes of sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent and how we incorporate all 6 tastes in the Ayurvedic meals we create. Each of the 6 tastes have different healing actions on the body and when they are combined together into a complete and balanced meal, they will bring harmony to the body and digestive system. The Ayurvedic meal consists of a variety of dishes so that each of the 6 tastes can be represented.

This is a cooking demonstration weekend where we will cook and eat together. Meals be a vegetable, lentil and rice dish along with an Ayurvedic dessert, and we will incorporate our homemade ghee and ayurvedic spice blends when we are cooking.

Sunday will be a day of Ayurvedic Beauty Potions! We will be making our own products with organic ingredients and essential oils. Susan will be sharing ayurvedic secrets for lasting inner and outer beauty!

All levels of students are welcome.

This Weekend Retreat is designed for those looking to bring a better state of balance to their yoga/meditation practice and their daily living.
