DC is bustling with fitness and yoga studios. Whether you’re looking for a home studio in your neighborhood, or a place to visit across town, it’s helpful to know what’s out there. Here are a few of our favorite studios in Virginia that put the V in DMV!

Unity Woods Yoga

The Studio: Yoga at Unity Woods is not trendy, but timeless. Unity Woods is one of the best known and most widely respected yoga centers in the country, and is now the largest Iyengar Yoga center in the U.S. With time, Unity Woods has grown to include three locations in Maryland, Virginia, and DC.

The Owner: John Schumacher has practiced yoga for more than 40 years, and has taught in the Washington area since 1973. John studied in India with B.K.S. Iyengar for 33 years, and is a certified advanced Iyengar Yoga teacher, one of only 13 teachers in the U.S. to hold that level of certification. John’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor have made him one of the country’s leading yoga teachers. Yoga Journal described him as “one of 25 originals shaping yoga in America.”

What’s Unique: This is the premier Iyengar Yoga studio in the DMV. This style of yoga develops self-awareness through precision in movement and attention to the subtleties of body, breath, mind, and spirit.

Beloved Yoga

The Studio: Just over a year ago, Beloved opened a beautiful new space on Sunset Hills Rd with over 80 classes a week from beginner to Vinyasa and from prenatal to seniors.

The Owner: Maryam Ovissi, E-RYT 500, RCYT, RPYT, YACEP has been teaching since 2001. Coming from the Art world, she honors creativity and curiosity….considers them two important aspects of a great teacher. Creating accessible spaces for all is her driving force. Beloved Yoga offers yoga for all age and all abilities. If you need a pass, just ask and she is happy to gift passes when there is a need. Maryam is most proud of her team of 85 teachers and managers that are making impacts through the practice, process and philosophy of Yoga!

What’s Unique: Utilizing the science of Yoga and the wisdom of the Poly Vagal Theory – Beloved Yoga believes in the power of social engagement to create safety. Every class opens up with a little discussion and seed of Yoga philosophy is planted.  They keep the Yoga in the practice!

Honest Soul Yoga

The Studio: HSY has three locations – Alexandria, West Springfield, and now, Tysons/Falls Church! HSY offers six signature class styles, in addition to a full schedule of workshops and trainings.

The Owner: Suzie Mills, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, decided to open HSY in 2013after her deployment to Afghanistan. She left her career in IT, and opened a studio to enable military families, veterans and everyday citizens alike to find a sense of home on the mats and within a like-hearted community. In 2018, the company’s Co-Owner and Chief Strategy Officer, Julia Lopez, came on board to further HSY’s expansion from one to three locations in Northern Virginia, and also new markets in the near future.

What’s Unique: HSY is unique in offering an intensity spectrum rather than class levels, inviting practitioners to find a more well-rounded physical approach to daily asana practice. HSY is also proud to be a Veteran Woman-Owned Small Business! To show support for military members and their families, HSY offers discounts on classes and studio memberships, offer free classes on Ft. Belvoir, and host a 24-hour Yogathon to raise funds to increase access to yoga for military members, support female veterans, and aid military families.

Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga

The Studio: MTM has two locations – Alexandria and Arlington – and they have it all  – pilates, yoga, barre, and countless variations thereof. Each location features a hot studio for heated yoga and pilates. MTM Arlington has infrared heat, which has many healing properties. MTM also offers an endless rotation of specialized series, workshops, and trainings.

The Owner: Megan Brown and Sara VanderGoot opened MTM in 2008. Megan’s background is in physical therapy and Pilates, and Sara has a background in yoga and massage therapy. Before opening MTM, Megan and Sara observed that many of their clients were coming in with similar needs. Together, Megan and Sara carefully crafted a curriculum of Pilates and yoga classes to address needs for clients who are pregnant, postpartum, have injuries or limitations, are new to a practice, and for advanced students looking for an extra challenge.

What’s Unique: MTM’s prenatal and postnatal programs are next level, offering everything from regularly scheduled drop-in classes to specialized series. MTM has built a community to support you in the unique, and sometimes challenging, time.

PIES Fitness Yoga

The Studio: PIES Fitness operates two locations – West End Village and Valley Forge in the West End of Alexandria. Named for the levels of healing – Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual – PIES takes a holistic approach to wellness in everything from group and private yoga therapy, yoga teacher training and continuing education, and even promote cross training by offering dance fitness, boot camp, capoeira, and body sculpt classes to round out a weekly schedule of over 70 classes, 30 of which are accessible to beginners and seniors.

The Owner: The transformation that occurred for certified yoga therapist and trauma sensitive yoga facilitator, Marsha D. Banks-Harold, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, TCTSY-F, RYCT, RPYT, BSEE, during her first 200-hour teacher training deepened her quest to help others obtain physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual (PIES) peace. Marsha’s passion is to serve the special needs community, the aging, and marginalized populations in her inclusive and diverse studio.

What’s Unique: Think you can’t do yoga? Try My Body Don’t Bend That Way – a class designed for those of us whose bodies don’t seem to want to bend the way we want them to. This class is designed to take yoga at a gentle but challenging pace so you will leave feeling inspired and empowered.

East Meets West Yoga Studio

The Studio: Located in Vienna, this community-oriented studio seeks to provide a nurturing environment where one can discover the joys of yoga and the profound benefits of a regular spiritual practice. The schedule features a wide range of classes, with everything from Gentle Yoga for Balance to Rocket Yoga. 

The Owner: Dawn Curtis is a full time therapeutic yoga teacher and Yoga Therapist (E-RYT 500 & CYT) with 25 years of yoga experience. Her therapeutic background includes Yoga of Recovery, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga for Depression & Anxiety, Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors through Duke Integrative Medicine, Yoga of the Heart (Cardiac and Cancer) Therapeutic Yoga. Dawn is also a certified Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist. 

What’s Unique: EMW features exciting workshops and attracts incredible guest teachers, including Angela Blueskies, Jennifer Kreatsoulas, Tao Porchon Lynch, and more!

Radiance Yoga

The Studio: Radiance Yoga is an inviting and peaceful place to explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Class offerings include Flow, Kundalini, Yin, Restorative and Prenatal. Radiance workshops, events, and community programs provide opportunities for students to know one another, deepen their practice, and share ideas on living a yogic lifestyle.

The Owner: Masuda Mohamadi (Sat Meher) is a graduate of Anodea Judith’s Sacred Center Program and is the founder and director of Radiance Yoga. Masuda is a Professional Level Kundalini Yoga Teacher Trainer and 500-hour level RYT.  She first discovered Kundalini Yoga while teaching writing and outdoor living skills at the Mountain Institute in West Virginia in 2002. She became devoted to the practice and finished her first teacher training in 2004.

What’s Unique: LOTS of free community events – morning sadhanas, yoga at the farmers market, and more!
