New Year, New You – Yoga for Beginners in the DC Area!

It may be spurred by holiday stress, or could be your New Year’s Resolution, but whatever your reason, there’s no better time to start practicing yoga! The benefits on your mind and body are extraordinary. It can be daunting to walk into a yoga class as a beginner, so we’ve compiled a list of programs designed specifically to provide new students a safe space to learn and explore the practice of yoga. 

Learn to Meditate at the Meditation Museum!

If you have ever wanted to meditate but did not know how to begin this – class is for you. People meditate for all sorts of reasons: to relax; calm down; relieve stress; improve relationships; understand themselves; tap into their potential; find meaning and purpose in life; and awaken their spirituality. This class will cover the basics to begin incorporating meditation into your daily life.

Radiance Yoga – Beginners Flow Yoga Series
Six Week Series
Mondays (Starts January 2)
Cost: $129

This series breaks vinyasa yoga down and dives deep into  everything from proper breathing techniques and fundamental yoga poses to methods for relaxation. This series will help you build confidence, strength and flexibility to prepare for regular flow classes. This program includes unlimited yoga during the series. You don’t need to have a flexible body or a quiet mind to begin– you just need to show up!

Pure Prana – Beginners Yoga Course
Eight Week Series
Saturdays (Starts January 7)
Cost: $140

Pure Prana provides a rich introduction to the basics of yoga, including posture, alignment, breathing, awareness, and the ethical principles of the practice. Pure Prana limits the size of this class to offer time and attention to each student to help you get the most out of this program.

Yoga for Beginners Workshop Series at M Street Yoga
Mondays (January 9, January 30, February 20)
Cost: $99 for All Three Sessions // $40 Per Individual Class

Kick off 2017 right with this Yoga for Beginners series workshop. These sessions will offer a foundation for you to grow a safe, healthy yoga practice. If you are new to yoga this workshop will help you create a firm foundation for your yoga practice by learning the basics in a small, comfortable environment designed specifically for beginning practitioners who want to feel comfortable and confidant in a vinyasa class.

Honest Soul Yoga Beginner Series: Intro to Yoga // 21 Days Unlimited
Three Week Series
Tuesdays (Starts January 10)
Cost: $75

For the brand new yogi, this three week series will teach you how to make yoga work for your body! Each week will explore poses and alignment that suits your body, touch on philosophy of yoga, and introduce different styles of yoga. At the completion of this series you will feel empowered and ready to make your practice a part of your life! When you sign up for the Beginner Series you’ll also receive a 21-day pass for unlimited yoga classes.

Introduction to Pranayama at Bhakti Yoga DC
Workshop
Saturday, January 14
Cost: $45

Pranayama is a practice of controlling the breath, and in doing so, balancing the body and mind. This workshop will begin with a conversation about the uses of pranayama, followed by a guided practice of different pranayama techniques. Implementing breathwork in yoga poses allows for more opening and presence, while practicing pranayama on its own can relieve stress and boost energy and alertness, much like other forms of meditation. You will leave the workshop with the tools to deepen your existing practice or establish a new one.

This interactive, low-key introductory workshop provides a non-competitive space for the new yogi to “get their feet wet” exploring some basic yoga poses. Using breath and verbal cues, we will begin to feel how yoga theory, breath, and asana (physical poses), manifest in the body.

Pure Prana 6 Week Course: Intro to Ashtanga Yoga with Vivian Bell
Six Week Series
Tuesdays (Starts January 17)
Cost: $105

This 6-week course will teach you the asana sequences developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, building toward a guided half primary series class which includes sun salutations, standing and balancing poses, seated poses, backbends and finishing poses (including inversions). As progress is made, more poses will be explored with preparatory skill building drills and modifications. Hands-on assistance is provided throughout the sessions.

Intro to Yoga at Beloved Yoga
Four Week Series
Wednesdays (Starts January 18)
Cost: $120

New to yoga or coming back to it after a while? Not sure what yoga is all about? Want to learn some of the basics in a smaller, more individualized setting before heading into a larger class? In this 4 part series, you will: learn the fundamentals of certain basic yoga poses; experience breath awareness; become familiar with common yoga terms; leave with the beginnings of a home practice; and most importantly, have fun!
