Fall Planting & Gardening with Craig Ulsh

August 8, 2020 @ 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

We are in the dog days of summer and this is the time that summer staples are thriving – tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash. The end of summer does not mean the end of the growing season in northern Virginia. There are many cool weather crops that can be planted in late August / early September and harvested in late October / early November. Lettuce, peas, spinach, carrots and beets thrive in the cooler temperatures. The only real barrier is frost which hits in early November. Several plants are frost hardy and can survive over the winter.

Fall is also time to plant members of the allium family – onion, garlic, leeks and shallots. There is nothing like the joy of seeing signs of life throughout the winter and then comes to life in the spring.

We will also explore the concept of perennial vegetables that you plant once and will last for many seasons.

Saturday, August 8
Time: 1:30 – 3:30 pm
