Ask the Teacher: Everyone Farts!

Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for a day, a week, or month, we all have questions. It can be daunting to approach your teacher after class, so we’re bringing the expert to you! This week, Brittany Policastro, Philadelphia-based yoga teacher, facilitator, writer and founder/director of Beyond Asana, answers a few questions from our readers. Do you have a question? Let us know in the comments section below!

Have any of your students ever farted during class? What did you do? What do you do if you’re taking class and need to fart?
– Katie S., Chicago, IL

First, I love this question. And yes, people fart all of the time in yoga classes. It’s a bodily function. The only reason there is so much stigma around farting is because we as a society created it. Little kids fart whenever they please. And why? Because they don’t yet care what people think. To me this has a lot to do with why we are such a fart oppressed society.

When someone farts in class I do absolutely nothing. Chances are the person is embarrassed and hoping that no one will know it was them. So instead of bring attention to it, I simply let it flow. Just like they just did.

If you have to fart in class you have 2 options. You can hold it in and let it all go when you get in your car or outside. Or you can sneak it out and hope that it doesn’t smell too bad. Choice is up to you. But just remember. Everyone farts!
