Teaching Students in Larger Bodies: APD for Yoga Therapists

October 19 - October 20

$195

Teaching Students in Larger Bodies with Mindy Hanzlik, C-IAYT
Approved Professional Development for Yoga Therapists
October 19th and 20th 1:00p-7:00p

Over half of Americans are categorized by use of BMI tables as overweight or obese. This categorization belies the complexity of physical, psychoemotional, trauma-related, and mental challenges that these students may face, and may come to yoga therapy expecting help for. Fat bias is pervasive in our society (especially in medical and allied health professions), even from well-meaning people. Whether a yoga therapist intends to specialize in this area, they will undoubtedly serve larger students in their practice. This workshop will help yoga therapists feel confident that they can create a positive therapeutic relationship that allows their larger clients to thrive.

This 12-hour continuing education workshop for yoga therapists (and yoga teachers) brings competence and confidence to practitioners working with clients who live in larger bodies. We will examine our own core beliefs about larger people, debunk common misconceptions about the bodies and abilities of larger people, learn to work with anatomical and health conditions that some, but not all, larger students have, explore helpful asana modifications, and become competent using body-positive language. We will use the pancakosha model to organize the information we learn about our clients and to assist us in choosing appropriate tools. The workshop includes lecture, a panel discussion with larger yoga students, dyad and group processing, and practice teaching.

Note: the yoga therapy components of this course are based on our training with Integrative Yoga Therapy and others, as well as hundreds of hours of client work, not derived from our status as an RYS® or RYT’s with Yoga Alliance Registry.

– Class is held from 1:00p-7:00p on Saturday October 19th and Sunday October 20th.
– You must attend both sessions to receive APD credits for IAYT or CEU for Yoga Alliance. No partial credits will be given.
– Tuition is $195 and a payment plan is available.
– Register online at ganeshayogachicago.com/teaching-students-larger-bodies
– No refunds permitted, although registration can be transferred to another yoga therapist or yoga teacher. Contact the studio for details.
